Noise Cancelling Sennheiser PXC 550-II Review

Updated: Oct 15

While Bose remains the top name when it comes to noise-cancelling headphones, it's been seeing some awfully strong competition from the Sennheiser as of today. The PXC-550-II headphones deliver an elegant design with built-in Amazon Alexa support, strong audio performance, and some of the best ANC (active noise cancellation) available. Even though the Bose 700 Noise Cancelling Headphones are still an overall better pair, its once dramatic lead over other competitors is narrowing, and there are reasons you might prefer the Sennheiser PXC 550-II.

Design

The PXC 550-II headphones have a matte finish with leatherette accents on the headband, and on the earcups. There are touch-sensitive controls on the outer panels of the earcups, but you wouldn't know it from looking, as the panels are blank. The ear cups themselves are ear-shaped, which allows for a tight, secure fit that blocks out a decent amount of ambient room noise passively. The ear cups are quite comfortable. This isn't to say the fit is uncomfortable the padding is generous but it's possible to wear the headphones in a way that exerts more pressure than is ideal.

Sound Quality

These headphones sound clean and clear. The PXC 550-II sound is completely different to that of Sennheiser’s cousins: the Momentum series. Those headphones are known for their powerful, fun sub-bass and rich mid-range. The Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless sound ismore lighter. The bass is deep and assured, but doesn’t display the weight of the flagship Momentum pair. Some will interpret this as “less fun”, but the approach is closer to neutral. While there’s no chance of the low-end getting in the way, the Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless aren’t bass-light as a result.

Battery

Sennheiser estimates battery life to be roughly 20 hours with ANC and wireless on, or 30 hours with ANC on while using the audio cable, but your results will vary with your volume levels and your mix of features. Charging is fairly slow, however. An emergency charge doesn’t seem to get you all that much playtime. A full charge takes 3 hours. The Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless lag behind rivals in this regard; quick charging is now fairly common. They also use a dated micro-USB connector. The majority of new headphones have made the switch to USB-C.

Noise Cancellation

The noise cancellation on these is great, particularly if you haven’t tried any of Bose’s top pairs or the Sony WH-1000XM3 series headphones from the past few years. Engine noise is largely removed; suddenly, passing petrol cars sound more like electric models. However, the Bose QuietComfort 35 II and Sony WH-1000XM3 are better, removing more noise. They isolate you from the sonic stress of loud offices and pubs more effectively. The Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless do enough to satisfy, but their ANC falls short of being best-in-class.

Should you buy the Sennheiser PXC 550-II?

The Sennheiser PXC 550 II are very good active noise cancellation headphones.

Their noise cancellation is effective, but not the best around, and there are some minor issues such as ANC footfall pops and controller clicks during runs. Nevertheless, if you’re after a pair of headphones for travel rather than exercise, and prefer a clean sound with relatively accurate bass, then they’re worth picking up. The PXC 500 II are one of the top Best Bluetooth Headphones in the market as of today.
